When I was at the University of Pennsylvania I took a leadership course. Part of that course involved developing a personal "Vision Statement." Mine is shown below. The surprising thing is that for years I stumbled along professionally and personally with minor accomplishments but no real purpose. With this vision statement before me I have made significant strides towards accomplishing it, without really focusing a lot of additional energy on it. I have made minor changes to it over the years, but it remains essentially the same as when I first wrote it.

Personal Vision

(Who am I five to seven years from today?):

I am respected by my colleagues and peers for my strategic thinking and management abilities. I have achieved professional recognition because of my thorough analytical abilities and diverse professional accomplishments. I am recognized as a skilled mentor whose students have gone on to greatness.
